Paper Bag Day 2025: Global warming is an escalating threat, and its impact is becoming increasingly evident across the world. Among the major contributors to this crisis is plastic pollution, which continues to wreak havoc on the environment. In an effort to raise awareness and promote sustainable alternatives, World Paper Bag Day is observed every year on July 12.
The day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to reduce plastic usage, especially plastic bags, and encourages the adoption of paper bags, a far more eco-friendly and biodegradable alternative.
Paper Bag Day 2025: History And Significance
While there is no definitive record of who invented the paper bag, Francis Wolle is widely credited with developing the first paper bag-making machine in 1852. Contrary to common belief, the history of paper bags dates back to the 19th century—long before plastic bags became widespread.
Wolle was granted a patent for his invention, which enabled the mass production of paper bags, offering an eco-friendly alternative to plastic. Together with his brother, he went on to establish the Union Bag and Paper Company.
Their paper plant in Savannah, Georgia became well known and continues to operate to this day.
Another key figure in the evolution of the paper bag is Margaret E. Knight, who improved Wolle’s design in 1871 by creating bags with flat, box-shaped bottoms. Her innovation gave rise to the foldable paper bags commonly used today for groceries and retail.
A few years later, Charles Stillwell enhanced Knight’s design by adding pleated sides, making the bags easier to fold and store. In 1912, Walter Deubener further advanced the design by attaching cord handles, making paper bags more convenient to carry.
The modern paper bag, as we know it today, is the result of years of ingenuity and refinement by multiple inventors—each contributing to a sustainable solution that continues to serve both consumers and the environment.

Paper Bag Day 2025: How To Reduce Plastic With Simple Swaps
Plastic contributes significantly to pollution and environmental degradation, taking hundreds of years to decompose and often ending up as waste that piles up endlessly. The most effective way to combat this is by actively seeking sustainable alternatives. Here are a few simple changes that can make a big difference:
- Avoid plastic packaging in food items: Plastic packaging doesn’t just harm the environment—it can also pose health risks by releasing toxins into food. Instead, opt for paper-based packaging or carry your own steel or glass containers when buying groceries. When shopping for fruits and vegetables, take along a cloth bag that can be washed and reused multiple times.
- Replace plastic in everyday items: From plastic storage containers to toothbrushes and soap dispensers, plastic has become ingrained in our daily lives. Start switching to more sustainable options like bamboo toothbrushes, bamboo combs, and steel or glass jars for storage. These alternatives are not only durable but also environmentally friendly.
- Choose non-plastic toys: Children’s toys are a major source of plastic waste. Instead, look for toys made from wood, fabric, or recycled materials—ones that are designed to last, can be passed down or reused, and offer educational value. This not only reduces plastic use but also helps instil eco-conscious values from an early age.
